How do I get the Servlet engine environment?
After every servlet is instatiated, it has its init(ServletConfig) method called. Keep that ServletConfig object, and use its getInitParameter(String) method to access parameters defined for this very servlet. To access context-wide parameters, use getServletContext() and its methods.

It looks like this:

public class FooServlet exteds Servlet {

ServletConfig config;

public void init(ServletConfig cfg) {
...
config = cfg; // remember this object for future use
...
}

public void doGet(...) {
...
// a per-servlet environment parameter
String foo_param = cfg.getInitParameter("foo_param");
...
// a context-wide parameter
ServletContext sctx = cfg.getServletContext();
String bar_param = sctx.getInitParameter("bar_param");
}
}

Both ServletConfig and ServletContext have getInitParamNames() methods, useful for exploration :-)
